Dato’ Seri Ivan TehAWARDS AND RECOGNITION

Data and AI innovation behind the recognition

The technical work that the awards on this site were given for, described without the marketing vocabulary.

Commercialising analytics, not just demonstrating it

The distinction that matters most in this record is between proving a technique and shipping a product. A great many organisations can demonstrate that a model works on a prepared dataset. Considerably fewer can package that into something an enterprise customer will buy, deploy against messy production data, and renew the following year.

Fusionex was built on the second of those. The company is described in analyst and press coverage as having a complete and usable big data analytics product that was successfully commercialised from an ASEAN base, and the emphasis in that description belongs on the last two words.

The problem the products address

Most organisations are not short of data. They are short of a route from the data they already hold to a decision somebody can act on. The gap is usually made up of unglamorous obstacles: incompatible systems, inconsistent definitions, reporting that arrives after the decision window has closed.

The product work spans analytics, big data management, industrial digital transformation, the internet of things, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Those are not separate product lines so much as separate stages of the same journey from raw data to an operational decision.

Applied artificial intelligence, tested against operations

The Malaysia Technology Excellence recognition was given for artificial intelligence applied to logistics optimisation. Logistics is a useful discipline to be judged in, because the feedback is immediate and unsentimental. Either the routing improved against cost and delivery performance under real constraints, or it did not.

The same applied emphasis appears in the community work, where real time dashboards were placed with hospitals and analytical tools with organisations working on poverty and hunger. In both settings the measure of the technology is whether somebody made a better decision with it.

How the innovation claim is checked from outside

A technology company assessing its own innovation is not evidence. Independent assessment is, which is why the analyst inclusions carry weight disproportionate to their visibility. Being shortlisted in a Gartner report on modern analytics and business intelligence, and named a Major Player in the IDC MarketScape for big data and analytics, are outside judgements produced through a methodology the vendor does not control.

Questions people ask

What technology areas does Fusionex work in?

Analytics, big data management, machine learning, the internet of things and artificial intelligence, with products aimed at helping organisations derive usable insight from data they already hold.

What is meant by commercialised big data analytics?

A product that customers buy, deploy and renew, as distinct from a research capability or a consulting engagement. The distinction matters because shipping a supportable product to enterprise customers is a different discipline from proving a technique works.

How is the innovation record independently checked?

Through analyst assessment. Gartner and IDC evaluate vendors using briefings, customer references and a published methodology, which produces an outside view that a vendor cannot author.
